Legally Married

After 4 months of getting married to my beloved Shilpa, we r now legally married too. Yes we successfully got our married registered, and that too without the help from any tout  (who charge approx Rs 5000). Also the process also turned out to be relatively simpler that what I had expected. So for all those who are yet to get their marriage registered in Delhi here’s a ready reckoner on how to get marriage registered in Delhi.

Registration of marriage takes place at the office of SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate) . You can register at the SDM office  in whose jurisdiction any of the husband or wife resides.

Documents needed for marriage certificate:

1)      Copy of DOB proof – that can be 10th certificate, birth certificate, etc

2)      Copy of Address proof – voter’s I card, passport, etc

3)      3 passport size photographs of groom and bride each affixed on a plain sheet of paper (A4 size)

4)      One marriage photograph affixed on a plain sheet of paper (A4 size)

5)      Original  Marriage Invitation card

6)    Application form duly signed by both husband and wife. This can be obtained from the office of SDM itself. You can fill it up at the time of submitting above documents.

7)   Affidavit by both the parties stating place and date of marriage, date of birth, marital status at the time of marriage and nationality. The exact format is mentioned on the back side of application form .

8)  Receipt of Rs 100, which can be paid in cash at the time of submitting the documents.

Documents 1 to 4 need to be attested by a Gazetted officer.

In case you want to get your wife’s name changed, you have to submit an additional affidavit for the same. Affidavits can be obtained from any notary. Usually there are many present near the SDM office so you shouldnt have any problem.

Please note that documents required for marriage registration can be submitted on any working day between 10 AM and 1 PM. Both the husband and wife must be present at the time of submitting the documents and original documents should also be carried. Once you will submit the documents you will get a receipt which will mention the date and time of appearing for marriage registration. Insist on getting application numbertoo. The officials usually avoid giving application number so that they can give out of turn preference to people who have come for registration through touts.

On the day of registration of marriage you must carry originals copies of documents submitted. You must take along one witness. Any person who has a valid PAN card and Voter's ID and was present at the time of marriage can be a witness. The two documents should be carried in original along with a copy by the witness.

You will get a draft marriage registration certificate which you should thoroughly check. Once you give your approval you will be called by the SDM who will verify the original documents and sign the marriage certificate. This process can take up to an entire day.

You can also seek an appointment for marriage registration in delhi online. For more details click here

In addition there is proposal to bring into law a bill as per which you have to pay a penalty of Rs 10000 if the marriage is not registered within 60 days. So don't wait, hurry up. Read more.

thanks a lot. I have to get my marriage registered and this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
I have a couple of queries though.
1. I should affix all 6 photographs (3 mine & 3 of my wife) on a single A4 sheet. Or should I make it 6 sheets with each having 1 photograph on it.
2. If I affix multiple photographs on a sheet then do I need the attestation on each photograph separately. Or just one attestation of the entire sheet is enough.

Hi,
You can affix all 6 photos on a single A4 sheet but each photo must be attested separately.
